Why does Phantom wallet show a different balance than Solscan?
Phantom wallet and Solscan show different balances because they query different data sources at different times, and each handles token account state, rent exemptions, and pending transactions in its own way. The difference is almost always temporary and resolves on its own, but knowing why it happens helps you decide whether to act.
The root cause: cached vs. live data
Phantom wallet is a browser extension or mobile app that caches your balances locally to load quickly. It refreshes those balances by polling the Solana network through a public RPC provider, but it does not poll continuously. Solscan, by contrast, is a block explorer that queries the current state of the blockchain directly from an archive node every time you load a page. The two can disagree for several reasons:
- Phantom’s refresh interval - Phantom typically checks your balances every few seconds, but if you open the wallet after a long idle period, the cached balance may be minutes old.
- Solscan’s real-time read - Solscan reads the latest confirmed block at the moment you hit the page. If a transaction just landed in that block, Solscan shows it before Phantom has polled again.
- RPC node lag - Both Phantom and Solscan rely on RPC nodes, but not the same ones. If Phantom’s RPC node is a few slots behind Solscan’s, balances diverge.
Pending and unconfirmed transactions
If you sent or received Solana (SOL) or a token within the last minute, the transaction may be “processed” but not yet “confirmed.” Solscan usually shows the state after the first confirmation (one block). Phantom may still show the old balance until the transaction reaches the confirmation level your wallet considers final. Phantom’s default confirmation threshold is “confirmed” (one block), but some RPC providers mark a transaction as confirmed only after several blocks, creating a short gap.
Token account rent and rent-exempt balances
Solana requires each token account to hold a minimum SOL balance (rent exemption) to stay on the network. When you look at your SOL balance in Phantom, it shows the total SOL in your wallet’s main account. Solscan shows the same total, but it may also display the rent-exempt SOL held in associated token accounts (ATAs) as part of your wallet’s portfolio view. This can make your Solscan balance appear larger than Phantom’s if Phantom is only summing the main account balance and ignoring the SOL locked in token accounts. The difference is not lost - it is just categorized differently.
- Phantom’s view - Usually shows your main account SOL balance, then lists tokens separately.
- Solscan’s wallet page - May sum all SOL across your main account and all ATAs, then show a combined total.
Staked SOL and delegated stake accounts
If you have staked SOL, Phantom shows the staked amount as a separate entry under “Staking.” Solscan may include staked SOL in your total balance or list it under a “Stake” section depending on the page you are viewing. If you compare a “Total Balance” figure on Solscan with Phantom’s main wallet balance, the staked SOL will be missing from Phantom’s number.
How to resolve the difference
- Force a refresh in Phantom - Pull down on the mobile app or click the refresh icon in the browser extension. Wait 10 seconds.
- Check Solscan’s “Latest” vs. “Confirmed” tabs - Solscan offers a dropdown that lets you view the state at the latest slot or at the last confirmed block. If you see a discrepancy, switch to “Confirmed” to match Phantom’s default.
- Wait one minute - Most balance mismatches resolve within 60 seconds as Phantom’s RPC catches up.
- Clear Phantom’s cache - In the browser extension, go to Settings > Clear Cache, then restart the wallet. This forces a full re-fetch of all balances.
- Compare the actual on-chain data - Use Solscan to look up your wallet address and check the “Tokens” tab. Compare the token amounts listed there with what Phantom shows for each token, not the SOL total.
When the difference signals a real problem
A persistent balance gap (lasting more than five minutes) that does not resolve after a refresh may indicate:
- A failed token transfer - The transaction appears in your history but the token balance did not update. Check the transaction signature on Solscan for a failure reason.
- A drained or compromised wallet - If Solscan shows a much lower balance than Phantom, the wallet may have been emptied while Phantom’s cache was stale. Verify by checking the most recent transactions on Solscan.
- An RPC provider issue - Phantom’s default RPC may be stuck. Switch to a different RPC endpoint in Phantom’s settings under Network > Custom RPC.
In almost every case, the difference is a temporary artifact of caching and polling delays. If you need a definitive balance for a time-sensitive action - like sending the exact amount of SOL - refresh Phantom, confirm the number on Solscan, and then proceed.
